Fundamental information about your training
I get the feeling like sometimes, because there is so much information out there, it’s really easy to get misled and it’s hard to sometimes know what is the correct information for you. I think once we’ve got something pretty good, once you’ve found good information, the second part is to not get distracted by something else, by another piece of information that might be a little bit contradictory to what you initially thought. Now, what I implore you guys to do is actually find what works for you, we need to use good resources for this, and it can obviously take some time to find the right information for you. Look for commonalities between different resources. If a theme starts coming up, the same information, the same content, the same kind of facts, well then we can generally think that’s probably the right information. Whereas if we’re getting a lot of different conflicting pieces of information about a certain topic, it does get really difficult to know what’s true and what’s not. So I think our best bet, in that regard, is just to ignore it. Just ignore that advice. Avoid that advice. Look for the commonalities. Look for the similarities between different pieces of resources.
Keep it simple
An easy way to siphon this stuff down is looking for the most simple solution, just stick to the basics. Simple is absolutely best, especially when it comes to fitness, nutrition, and general training. Even as we get a little bit more advanced with some of our sport specific training, we still look for the most simple and practical ways to apply a good strength and conditioning program to our athletes. If it seems a little bit too complicated, then it probably is a little bit too complicated. Take a step back, have a look at the information that the person is presenting, and just decide whether that piece of information is for you. Unfortunately, I think we get a little caught up with, if it’s on YouTube, if it’s on Facebook, it’s gospel. When realistically, we should look at it, appreciate the advice that’s being given, and then critically analysis it to whether it will work for you or not. There’s tons and tons of information, that is really good information, but we don’t use every single day. There’s just not some practicalities to it. So it’s great to know it sometimes, like, okay, that’s a really good piece of information to know, but does it work for me? No, it doesn’t. It’s good that I know it now. Maybe in the future, if that scenario, that circumstance comes up for me, I might be able to use it. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
If you are doing a regime and it’s working for you, there is no reason to change. There are many articles about muscle confusion and the law of accommodation, (if you do exactly the same thing day in, day out, you’re gonna adapt to that stimulus, and stall progress). However, this doesn’t mean you should be changing your program drastically every week. You do not need to go from one program to the next. Just stick to one kind of template that fits for your circumstance right here, right now (keeping your goals in mind). Get the most out of it, even when you stop making progress, (which is rare) don’t freak out straightaway. Don’t just flip the bed straightaway. Stick with it, at least see it out for six months because that progress is could be hiding.
Methods are many, while principles are few
Principles are the fundamentals of training, they’re your main building blocks. What we know about human physiology and human performance works for us right now, so we stick to those principles. Realistically, the methods are just the variations in which we can apply those principles. They might work for different times and different circumstances, sometimes a principle is taken a little bit inaccurately and thought of as a method instead, and then that methodology can really take us down a garden path that leads to nowhere. We see it in nutrition, with different diet trends; keto, paleo, vegan, vegetarian, carnivorous etc. Just look for the commonalities in all these diets. If you’re trying to lose weight, we know that the commonality between all these diets is gonna be a calorie deficit. However you achieved that calorie deficit is up to you, so long as you get to a calorie deficit.
